KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak Energy has been recognised for environmental excellence at the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award (PMHA) 2024/2025, with several of its power generation facilities receiving top honours for environmental performance.
At the awards ceremony held here on Jan 27, Bakun Hydroelectric Plant received the Excellent Achievement in Environmental Performance award.
Two other Sarawak Energy facilities, Murum Hydroelectric Plant and Sejingkat Power Corporation, were accorded the Exceptional Achievement Award, while Mukah Power Generation received the Notable Achievement Award.
According to Sarawak Energy Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, the recognitions reflected the company’s continued efforts to strengthen environmental management and sustainability across its operations.
He said the company’s approach is supported by structured governance frameworks and corporate-level environmental programmes, including circular-economy initiatives, Go Green campaigns, and biodiversity conservation activities, which guide the planning, development, and operation of its facilities.
Sharbini added that Sarawak Energy is Malaysia’s first corporate signatory to the UN Global Compact’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C.
“SEB is the first corporate body in Malaysia committed to the United Nations Global Compact Network’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge, demonstrating its efforts to limit global temperature rise and support long-term climate action.
“These initiatives are aligned with the Sarawak Government’s sustainable development priorities under the Sarawak Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030),” he said in a statement.
The PMHA was officiated by Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, while Sarawak Energy was represented by a delegation led by its Vice-President for Hydro, Jonny Wong.
The PMHA, introduced in 1996, is Malaysia’s premier environmental award, serving as a national benchmark for organisations to evaluate and demonstrate excellence in environmental performance.
The award is jointly organised by the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers and the Environmental Management and Research Association of Malaysia, with support from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and the Department of Environment.
The PMHA 2024/2025 edition saw participation from 81 companies across sectors, including energy, manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, hospitality and oil palm plantations.
Sarawak Energy’s latest recognition follows recent international accolades received by Bakun Hydroelectric Plant, Malaysia’s largest renewable energy facility.
The plant has achieved Silver Certification under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard and, in September 2025, was awarded the International Hydropower Association’s Blue Planet Prize for outstanding sustainability performance.
Sarawak Energy has committed to certifying all its hydropower plants under international standards by 2030 and has been a member of the International Hydropower Association since 2010.
