TOKYO: The Sarawak government and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) of Japan have held a dialogue to explore potential collaborations in sustainable energy and industrial development.

The meeting, held at the NEDO head office in Kawasaki, near here on Tuesday, commenced with opening remarks from Executive Director of NEDO, Dr. Iimura Akiko, and Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development), Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.

Both leaders emphasised the importance of international cooperation in achieving a sustainable future.

Abdullah Zaidel, who led the Sarawak delegation, encouraged further collaboration with NEDO, highlighting the state commitment to green initiatives.

“NEDO presented an overview of their cutting-edge projects and international development efforts in key areas such as Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS), hydrogen and ammonia technologies, renewable energy sources, and the circular economy,” he said.

He added that the Sarawak delegation outlined the state’s initiatives and current development framework concerning its sustainability blueprint, energy transition strategies, and net-zero transition goals.

“The presentation showcased Sarawak’s dedication to becoming a leader in environmental sustainability and renewable energy including green technologies.

“Notably, the discussion also highlighted NEDO’s existing support for a microalgae project in Sarawak, aimed at producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), demonstrating a concrete example of the ongoing collaboration,” he added.
