BARCELONA: The Sarawak Government, through the Ministry for Utility and Telecommunication, attended the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 to convey a direct message to European industry players of its intention to position the state as a strategic partner in developing next-generation global infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technology manufacturing.
MUT, in a statement today, said the production of technological components is strategic in certain Asian hubs, and there is growing international competition to attract data centres and industrial capacity linked to AI.
“At Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Sarawak used its official pavilion to present a clear and ambitious roadmap for its digital transformation.
“The state government reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating technological innovation, expanding global partnerships and positioning Sarawak as a leading digital economy within the ASEAN region.
“The participation was reinforced by the exchange of five Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sarawak agencies and international technology partners, including Hewlett Packard (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Huawei, ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation Sdn Bhd, Llamalitica and Worldsensing,” the statement read.
Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang said that the global technology industry is entering a new stage where energy, digital infrastructure, and stability are as important as innovation.
“In Sarawak, we are working precisely on that foundation, ensuring competitive electrical capacity, reliable connectivity, and industrial environments prepared for large-scale projects,” he said in the statement.
He said that the MWC 2026 marked an opportunity to engage with European companies and institutions seeking to diversify supply chains and develop infrastructures linked to the digital economy.
“We want to build long-term alliances based on trust, execution, and shared objectives,” said Liwan.
