ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (UAE): The Sarawak government is looking to Abu Dhabi’s successful approach in developing its ports and airports as a potential model to elevate similar sectors in the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is on a working visit to the UAE, said the partnership-driven framework between Abu Dhabi’s public and private sectors could offer valuable insights for Sarawak.

“In the case of Abu Dhabi Port, development is driven by close collaboration between the government and private entities.

“We see the private sector playing an important role in this model,” he told reporters after touring Zayed International Airport.

He added that Sarawak is also exploring a suitable model to develop its aviation sector, and aims to adapt the latest technologies used in Abu Dhabi’s state-of-the-art airport.

“We’ve observed how Abu Dhabi built a sophisticated, green-rated airport that facilitates seamless passenger movement and incorporates modern infrastructure,” Abang Johari said.

He stressed the importance of keeping pace with global market trends and planning for the future, particularly as Sarawak continues on its development trajectory.

Earlier, Abang Johari witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) and Abu Dhabi Ports Group at Khalifa Port.

The MoU paves the way for strategic collaboration to establish a global maritime network linking Abu Dhabi with Sarawak and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

“This partnership will significantly enhance the capacity of Samalaju Port and strengthen the connectivity between our ports, especially Bintulu, and international maritime routes,” he said.

He noted that Abu Dhabi Port’s central location between Africa and Europe, combined with Sarawak’s strategic position in the Asia-Pacific, creates a unique opportunity for mutual economic growth.

“We believe this collaboration will help position Bintulu Port as a more competitive player in the regional logistics and shipping landscape,” he added.
