KUCHING: Sarawak is optimistic that Muay Thai will be included as one of the competitive events at the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, given the sport’s growing popularity across the region.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said the decision on its inclusion is still pending as discussions are ongoing.
“However, Muay Thai has yet to be confirmed as part of the official lineup for the 2027 SEA Games.
“It has yet to be decided as the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) is still in discussions. There have been requests from other countries to include more sports in the upcoming SEA Games,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after attending the TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Muay Thai Championship 2025 held at Kuching Waterfront last night (May 3).
Rentap noted that Muay Thai has already gained a strong foothold in ASEAN nations such as Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia, with regular tournaments and a growing pool of athletes.
“As for the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), Sarawak emerged as overall champions in the Muay Thai category.
“Therefore, some of our athletes may even be able to represent Malaysia if the sport is included in the SEA Games,” he said.
Malaysia is set to host the 34th SEA Games, with Sarawak confirmed as one of the co-hosts.
The state is currently considering 18 sports to be held across its venues.
