KUCHING: The Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) is intensifying efforts to build an efficient and integrated logistics ecosystem, with the goal of positioning Sarawak as a regional logistics hub.

Its minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said logistics is key to Sarawak’s economic transformation, particularly as a trade and investment enabler for the resource-rich region.

“To support this goal, various strategic initiatives are being implemented including facilitating modern and cost-effective logistics operations across land, sea and air, as well as improving first-mile and last-mile connectivity to support industry and trade.

“At the same time, Sarawak is also positioned as a major regional logistics hub through focused infrastructure upgrades and the implementation of strategic collaborations with relevant partners,” he said during the Hexagon Highs 20th Anniversary Dinner held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), here recently.

According to Lee, the ministry’s main focus at the moment is to enhance air cargo capacity at the Kuching International Airport (KIA).

“The KIA Cargo Terminal Redevelopment Plan is designed to address key challenges such as congestion, limited workspace and security issues.

“The new plan includes the expansion of the 18,000 square feet of lorry parking area, improvements to the cargo dock, rest areas and support facilities, the construction of a special operating zone for DHL as well as full compliance with the safety standards set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM),” he said.

Elaborating further, he said that this move will not only increase cargo capacity and safety, but also improve the overall experience of logistics operators.

In the first quarter of 2025, Sarawak recorded a total air cargo handling of 14,438 tonnes, an increase of 23.3 per cent compared to 11,072 tonnes in the same period in 2024.

In this regard, Lee stressed that Sarawak’s vision in the logistics sector does not stop at the redevelopment of KIA, but will be expanded to support the overall transformation towards a competitive logistics hub in the region.
