KUCHING: The relocation of Indonesia’s capital to Nusantara, East Kalimantan, marks a crucial moment not only for Indonesia but also for Sarawak, which is positioning itself as a key partner in the new geopolitical landscape.

The move presents strategic opportunities for Sarawak to strengthen its bilateral ties with Indonesia, especially in areas such as economic collaboration, cultural exchange, and community development.

Speaking on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah highlighted the historical and cultural ties that bind Sarawak and Indonesia during the diplomatic reception for the 79th anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence.

The Premier expressed optimism about the potential for expanded cooperation, particularly with Nusantara as Sarawak’s immediate neighbour.

“The relocation of Indonesia’s capital to Nusantara offers Sarawak a unique opportunity to deepen its bilateral cooperation with Indonesia across various sectors, including the economy, socio-cultural exchange, and services aimed at protecting and supporting migrant communities,” he said.

One area of focus is the welfare of children at the community learning centres (CLCs) in Sarawak’s plantations. These centres serve the educational needs of Indonesian migrant workers’ children, highlighting the cross-border collaboration in providing essential services.

Abang Johari also underscored the importance of the deep-rooted relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia, which he said was built on mutual respect and shared cultural values.

“As we face these transitions, including the capital relocation and Indonesia’s long-term vision for 2045, we are committed to ensuring that this relationship continues to thrive and benefit both nations,” he added.

The Premier’s remarks also echoed the sentiments of the anniversary’s theme, ‘Nusantara Baru, Indonesia Maju’ (New Nusantara, Advanced Indonesia), which reflects Indonesia’s ambition for sustainable development and progress in the coming decades.

“This celebration is not just significant for Indonesia, but for the entire region as it signifies a shared journey of progress and cooperation,” he said.

The relocation of Indonesia’s capital to Nusantara, a mere 400km from Sarawak, is seen as a catalyst for enhanced cross-border trade, infrastructure development, and investment opportunities.

As both nations look toward the future, Sarawak aims to play a pivotal role in supporting and benefiting from Indonesia’s ambitious growth plans.

The event was also attended by Indonesian Consul-General in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin and his deputies Datuk Dr Jerip Susil and Datuk Henry Harry Jinep.
