KUCHING: Sarawak’s border security is set to be strengthened through a new General Operations Force (GOF) strategy focusing on strategic collaboration, asset upgrades, and force reinforcement in remote areas.

Department of Internal Security and Public Order (GOF) Deputy Director, Datuk Mohamad Suzrin Mohamad Rodhi, said the initiative aims to address security challenges along Sarawak’s border, stretching from Tanjung Datu to Limbang, including areas near Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Over the past seven months under the leadership of outgoing Sarawak GOF Brigade Commander, SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang, the brigade had successfully carried out several key operations, including the seizure of contraband goods and e-waste, demonstrating the team’s effectiveness on the ground.

“These achievements form the foundation for a strategic plan to further strengthen border control and public safety in the state,” he said at a press conference after witnessing the handing over of Sarawak GOF Brigade Commander duties at Sarawak GOF Brigade Headquarters today.

Suzrin shared that support from Bukit Aman leadership and Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) has enabled the implementation of new physical assets, including the establishment of Forward Operating Bases (FOB) at strategic locations across Sarawak.

“Approved new assets include Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), 4×4 robust vehicles, and drones to enhance the mobility of forces in remote and border areas. These assets will be delivered in stages either year end or next year.

“Deployment to frontline posts is also supported by the marine police and air units, enabling faster and more efficient operations,” he said.

In terms of additional manpower, he pointed out that the department had conducted an internal restructuring of the GOF last year – which includes redeployment of personnel to strategic locations and the formation of a new battalion – 23rd Battalion in Sri Aman – to further reinforce state security.

Suzrin stated that the upcoming Border Project will include a proposal to strengthen the Sarawak GOF Brigade in line with the relocation of Indonesia’s capital city, ensuring that the borders of Sarawak and Sabah remain secure.

“Apart from physical assets, the GOF’s administrative and logistical aspects are also being improved through a reform and rebranding proposal currently awaiting ministerial approval to boost operational effectiveness,” he said.
