KUCHING: An eight-member Sarawak gymnastics squad will undergo an intensive training camp in Kunming from April 5 to 19 as part of their final preparations for the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor in August.

The SUKMA-bound contingent comprises athletes from both men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics (MAG and WAG), and will be supported by a team manager, head coach, assistant coach and a sports development officer throughout the two-week programme.

Sarawak Amateur Gymnastics Association (SAGYMA) president, Johnny Tan Seng Hock, said the overseas stint is a key component of the team’s build-up, aimed at raising overall performance levels ahead of the Games in August.

“The training camp in Kunming provides a valuable opportunity for our athletes to refine their techniques and enhance their preparations. It is designed to strengthen both their physical and mental capabilities,” he said.

He added that exposure to a more demanding training environment would help the gymnasts adapt to higher levels of intensity, while also improving endurance and consistency in their routines.

“This programme also allows them to experience different training methodologies, which can further elevate their performance.

“At the same time, it prepares them mentally to cope with the pressures of competition,” he told Sarawak Tribune today.

Beyond individual development, the camp is also expected to strengthen team dynamics, with the structured environment encouraging better communication, cooperation and mutual support among athletes and officials.

Tan noted that such international exposure plays an important role in shaping a more resilient and confident squad, particularly as Sarawak aims to make a strong showing at SUKMA.
