KUCHING: Serving over 245,000 Sarawakians as of late, the Sarawak Heart Centre (SHC) plays a crucial role in saving lives and enhancing the healthcare system in Sarawak.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian noted that without the SHC, the financial burden of treating such a large number of patients would be unsustainable, reflecting on the Centre’s journey from its modest beginnings to being recognised as one of the top 100 heart centres in the Asia-Pacific region by Newsweek in recent years.

“We’ve made it into the top 100, and that’s not just because of me – it’s because of the people who stayed behind, believed in the values, and carried on the work,” he said during his speech at Reach Ten Holding Berhad’s prospectus launching ceremony, here today (Apr 9).

He emphasised that the SHC’s recognition was the result of the unwavering commitment and dedication of its staff, who embraced the vision he set out.

“The success of the Sarawak Heart Centre is due to the people who believed in what we were doing and made it their own,” he said.

Dr Sim also shared a sobering statistic to underline the Centre’s importance: without the SHC, many Sarawakians would face an uncertain future without timely access to the heart care they desperately need.

“It’s not just about numbers. It’s about lives, families, and communities that we protect every day,” he said, reinforcing the Centre’s role in preventing untold hardship.

He also pointed out that many in Sarawak still fail to fully understand the significance of accessible healthcare.

“We must ensure that everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from, receives the best care possible,” he said.
