KUCHING: A state known for its warm hospitality once again proved to be more than just a competition venue at the 3rd Asian Doubles 2026 Championships.

The Sarawak Squash Centre paused for a familiar celebration today (June 19), as three international figures marked their birthdays in Kuching during the tournament period – adding a rare personal touch to an otherwise high-stakes environment.

While last year’s celebrations were separate, their birthdays coincidentally fell during the same championship in Kuching again this year, bringing them together in a shared moment.

Singapore coach Chua Man Tong, 33, South Korean player Heo Ming Gyeong, 30, and Chinese Taipei player Pan Hong Rui, who had just turned 18, shared the moment at the championship venue.

Despite representing different countries and competing under different roles – player and coach – the trio have become loosely linked by timing and circumstance, with their birthdays coinciding during the championship period in Sarawak for two consecutive years.

The brief celebration took place on the sidelines of the tournament, where players and officials paused to acknowledge the occasion before returning focus to competition duties.

Beyond the intensity of play, the moment highlighted Kuching’s growing stature as a welcoming sporting hub, where international athletes not only compete but also share meaningful off-court experiences.

While the championships continue to showcase rising standards across Asia, moments like these serve as a reminder of the human connections formed within sport – even amid pressure, rankings and rivalry.
