SIBU: The Sarawak ICT Association (SICTA) is described as an important strategic partner in the success of the Sarawak Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, especially in empowering digital transformation and building the foundation for a smart city based on artificial intelligence (AI).

Deputy Digital Minister, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, said SICTA has not only played a major role in developing the state’s ICT sector over the past 25 years, but it has also helped bridge the digital divide and strengthen technology inclusion at the grassroots level.

“SICTA’s role is now more important in supporting PCDS 2030 which is based on data, innovation and sustainability.

“Contributions such as digital skills training, cybersecurity awareness, and computer programmes for students in need prove SICTA’s commitment to the development of a digital society,” he said at the SICTA’s 25th Anniversary Celebration held in a prominent hotel here on Saturday night.

The Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament also highlighted SICTA’s potential in supporting the development of rural digital infrastructure, building a skilled workforce in AI and cyber, fostering local innovation, assisting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in digitalisation, and promoting green ICT practices.

He said SICTA’s efforts were also in line with the country’s aspiration to become an AI Nation by 2030, in line with the direction of the Kuala Lumpur Smart City Expo 2025 which highlighted the concept of AI City – an inclusive, sustainable and people-centred city.

“Smart city transformation is not just the government’s responsibility. It requires close collaboration with industry players like SICTA who understand local needs and are able to bring technology to all levels of society,” he said.

He also assured that the Digital Ministry is committed to continuing to work with SICTA, especially in talent development, technology expansion to rural areas, and building a local innovation ecosystem.

“This 25th anniversary celebration is not just a celebration of achievements, but a starting point for SICTA’s greater role in shaping the future of Sarawak as a smart and inclusive state,” Ugak added.

SICTA Chairman, Yong Chee Tak, who spoke earlier, asserted that he would ensure that SICTA is even stronger and more relevant than ever, to be the top force in Sarawak’s digital industriousness, and help members acquire skills and get connected to every possible business engagement.

“The future is happening right now. Things like Al, cloud, and cybersecurity aren’t just for the big players anymore; they’re for us too.

“So my challenge to members is not to be afraid to change. Let’s diversify, learn new things, and not just watch the future happen. Let’s be the ones who build it,” Yong stated.

Among others, the event also incoporated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between SICTA with Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) and PIKOM.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Chairman, Clarence Ting Ing Horth, Sibu Rural District Council Chairman, Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, and Organising Committee Chairman, Wong Ing Ang, were among those present.
