KUCHING: Sarawak is moving towards cleaner public transport with the Rembus H2 Hub, which includes the Rembus Hydrogen Plant, set to be fully operational by 2026.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the plant will support the Kuching Urban Transport System (KUTS), which will use hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles and feeder buses to connect Kuching, Samarahan, and Santubong.

“These routes will be served by hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles and feeder buses, strategically connecting residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

“This is just the first of many, and I believe with SEDC Energy being at the forefront of this journey for Sarawak and Malaysia, our real hydrogen journey has just begun,” he said after a meeting with SEDC Energy (SEDCE) chief executive officer (CEO) Robert Hardin yesterday.

SEDC Energy (SEDCE) is also expanding Multifuel Stations (MFS) under the Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) brand, offering conventional fuel, electric vehicle (EV) charging, and hydrogen refuelling.

“The flagship Multi Fuel Station (MFS) is unique for Sarawak as this is the first in the region to have not only conventional fuel but also EV charging and hydrogen dispensing,” he said.

Sarawak is also strengthening its role in the global hydrogen market through the H2ornbill Project, which exports green hydrogen to Japan, and the H2biscus Project, which supplies South Korea’s power grid.

“These two major projects are progressing well, and once these are fully operational, that will solidify Sarawak’s position in paving the way towards decarbonising not only the region but also Asia Pacific with our two international partners,” he said.

“All these Sarawak hydrogen initiatives play part and parcel of the whole decarbonisation agenda of the world. Sarawak is the epicentre for all this, with Rembus Hydrogen Plant making the first big step towards our Net Zero 2050 journey,” he added.
