KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawakian doctor, inventor and innovator, Dr John Tang Ing Ching, received the prestigious Luminary Award from the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS) for his exceptional national contributions to innovation and research.
Dr Tang’s recognition marks another proud milestone for Sarawak, highlighting the state’s growing reputation as a hub for creativity and technological advancement.
His achievement is made possible with the support of the Sarawak Research Development Council (SRDC), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), and the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), which have played key roles in nurturing and funding his research efforts.
Through their backing, Dr Tang has successfully invented several groundbreaking medical devices that are now commercialised globally, including the world’s first unisex condom, adhesive pouch dressing, and hammock wheelchair.
“I am deeply humbled by this recognition,” said Dr Tang today. “I would like to extend my gratitude to SRDC, MOSTI and UTS for their unwavering support throughout my research journey. This award is not just a personal achievement but also a reflection of the potential of Sarawakian inventors and entrepreneurs.
“There is no better time to be an inventor in Sarawak. The innovation ecosystem put in place by our state government has allowed inventors like me to pursue novel ideas.”
The Malaysian Inventor & Innovator Convention (MYIIC) is an annual event organised by MINDS, a professional organisation established in 1986.
MINDS serves as Malaysia’s premier platform that brings together inventors, researchers, designers and innovative entrepreneurs to foster a culture of creativity and innovation nationwide.
For this year’s edition, 61 candidates were shortlisted for two main categories, the Luminary Award and the Meritorious Award. Only five recipients were selected for the Luminary Award while seven others received the Meritorious Award.
The Luminary Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional excellence in invention and innovation, making significant contributions to both industry and society.
