KUCHING: Sarawak’s vibrant cultural scene takes centre stage once again with the fifth edition of the Sarawak International Festival of Music and Arts (SIFMA) set to dazzle audiences at the Sarawak Banquet Hall, DUN building, on Dec 7 and 8.
Announced at a press conference today by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, this year’s SIFMA promises a fusion of music, dance, and fashion featuring world-class performances from across the globe.
“The festival will showcase artists and troupes from Belgium, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia. Highlights include renowned pianist Dr. Gilbert De Greeve, traditional dance groups from India and Indonesia, a ballet troupe from the Philippines, and local stars like the SIFMA Orchestra, Sarawak Ethnic Orchestra, and soloist Wendy Yong,” he said.
Karim noted the importance of developing Sarawak’s performing arts and creative industries ahead of the completion of the Sarawak Performing Arts Centre.
“We envision a thriving arts scene with regular performances, ensuring our center becomes a hub of creativity, not a white elephant.
“SIFMA not only serves as a platform for cultural exchange but also boosts tourism. When performers come, they bring their families and explore our attractions. This benefits the local economy and promotes Sarawak as a global cultural destination,” he added.
SIFMA’s visionary behind-the-scenes force, chairperson Dr Geraldine Law-Lee, expressed her commitment to nurture local talent and preserving Sarawak’s cultural heritage.
“SIFMA is not just about international performances; it is about benefiting Sarawakians. Through workshops and masterclasses, our local talents gain exposure and opportunities to perform on the world stage,” she said.
The festival also aims to spotlight traditional instruments like the Enkulurai, a Sarawakian instrument nearing extinction.
Efforts are underway to revive its production and inspire new industries tied to cultural preservation.
