KUCHING: A three-decade partnership between the Forests Department Sarawak (FDS) and the Japan-Malaysia Association (JMA) has resulted in more than one million trees planted across the state since 1995.
FDS Director, Datuk Hamden Mohammad, received JMA President, Takakazu Ogawa, and his delegation during a courtesy visit to the department’s headquarters here today.
The visit formed part of the delegation’s official programme in Kuching from April 4 to 7, which includes site visits to areas under Sarawak’s Forest Landscape Restoration initiatives.
According to FDS, the collaboration has contributed significantly to forest restoration, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience efforts in the state over the past 30 years.
“The programme reflects the longstanding and productive collaboration between JMA and FDS in advancing sustainable forest management and restoration efforts since 1995,” the department said in a statement.
Over the course of the partnership, more than one million trees were planted between 1995 and 2025, marking a major milestone in supporting Sarawak’s forest landscape restoration agenda.
The courtesy call also provided a platform for both parties to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and to exchange views on ongoing and future initiatives in forest conservation, restoration and sustainable forest management.
