KUCHING: The Sarawak Government, through Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), will continue its collaboration with PT Kayan Hydropower Nusantara (KHN) to develop a hydroelectric dam at Mentarang Induk, North Kalimantan.
Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that SEB’s services are still in demand despite the hydroelectric project having been implemented nearly four years ago.
“The Indonesian government has developed this hydroelectric project with the help of SEB and it has been operational for almost four years.
“Discussions (on the collaboration) are still ongoing to ensure its completion,” he said when commenting on his ministry’s recent visit to Jakarta, Indonesia.
Abdul Rahman, who led the Sarawak delegation during the visit, revealed that discussions were held with PT Perusahaan Elektrik Negara Indonesia (PLN) regarding the expansion of electricity supply to the Kalimantan area.
“We have already supplied some electricity to Indonesia, West Kalimantan, and one of the things discussed was to increase the electricity supply to a larger area in Kalimantan,” he said.
Also discussed, according to Abdul Rahman were the tariff rates between SEB and PLN.
He disclosed that their delegation was warmly welcomed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, which also expressed interest in visiting Sarawak.
“I had the opportunity to meet with Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, and he welcomed our delegation.
“They also intend to visit Kuching and will discuss with the Sarawak Government on joint efforts to develop energy and other resources, especially involving the states and countries in this Borneo island region,” he added.
