SIBU: The Sarawak Kayan Association (PKS) will be establishing a new branch here, said its president Datuk Dennis Ngau.
He said that the matter had been approved during the association’s committee meeting held at the newly completed FORUM Cultural Museum here last Saturday.
“We have instructed the association’s secretary-general to submit the application or relevant information to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) Sibu Branch,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The Telang Usan assemblyman added that the association will also be opening a new branch in Long Lama.
“At present, the association has several branches, including in Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Sungai Asap Belaga, Marudi and more.
“The establishment of more branches is a very positive development, as we aim to unite the Kayan community who have moved away from their villages and are now residing in cities across Sarawak,” he said.
He also said that they have also received requests to establish branches in Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.
“However, to set up branches in Kuala Lumpur and Sabah, we need to refer to the ROS, as our association’s constitution only permits the establishment of branches within Sarawak,” he stressed.
At present, the Sarawak Kayan Association has more than 2,000 members, and this number continues to grow.
“Our association’s branches remain active in recruiting new members, and I have observed that, in recent times, the younger generation is also showing interest in joining us,” he added.
Meanwhile, regarding the association’s programmes, Dennis said that they will continue to organise more events, including the Kayan Cultural Festival and Pesta Lunau, also known as the Harvest Festival.
He said that the Kayan Cultural Festival is held once every two years, with the next event scheduled for 2026.
“These events will showcase Kayan culture as well as traditional Kayan games.
“We will also look into organising more gatherings with our branches to strengthen ties and disseminate important information to them.
“We will also participate in the upcoming FORUM Biannual General Meeting, scheduled for March 23 at the FORUM Cultural Centre, with a strong delegation of nine members and six observers,” he said.
