KUCHING: A recent delegation from Sarawak, led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, visited the Energy Park in Øygarden, Vestland, in Norway to explore cutting-edge green industry solution.

A press statement said the Energy Park serves as a model for integrating the entire carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain, hosting a carbon dioxide (CO2) reception and storage facility while enabling large-scale hydrogen-based energy production from natural gas with CCS.

During the visit, Coast Center Base (CCB) chief executive officer (CEO) Ronny Haufe, delivered a presentation on the concept of industrial symbiosis at the Energy Park, which fosters a unique economic ecosystem by integrating industries in a sustainable manner.

Sarawak expressed keen interest in exploring and studying opportunities for developing a similar concept in the state.

CCB is a leading service provider based in Ågotnes, near Bergen, Norway, specialising in logistics, maintenance, and support services for the oil, gas, and maritime industries.

“It is also a key player in renewable energy, offshore wind, hydrogen production, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) through its CCB Energy Park in Øygarden.

“CCB plays a crucial role in the Northern Lights CCS project, contributing to Norway’s sustainability and decarbonisation efforts,” the statement said.

Sarawak, as Malaysia’s largest state, is rich in natural resources and well-positioned to lead the way in sustainable energy development.

With major hydropower projects like the Murum and Bakun dams already contributing significantly to Malaysia’s clean energy supply, the state is actively transitioning towards a diversified and sustainable economic model.

This includes leveraging hydropower, hydrogen production, and exploring carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies to reduce emissions and support a low-carbon future.

The delegation also toured the Northern Lights facilities, gaining valuable insights into the CO₂ storage process.

With Sarawak’s strong commitment to green energy and climate solutions and CCB’s expertise in the field, both parties have expressed mutual interest in collaborating.

This potential partnership aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and resources, driving the advancement of clean energy technologies and climate solutions at an accelerated pace.

The delegation also included Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Law and Customs) and Bukit Goram Assemblyman Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Natural Resources & Urban Development Datuk Abdullah Julaihi; Chief Executive Officer of Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) Datuk Ismawi Ismuni; Director of Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Sarawak Datuk Lester Matthew; First Secretary, Embassy of Malaysia in Stockholm, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia Theventhiran Arumugam; Senior State Counsel, Sarawak State Attorney-General’s Chamber Mohd Adzrul Adzlan; and Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Dzulkornain Masron.
