KUCHING: Sarawak’s top leaders have expressed their condolences following the passing of Kinabatangan MP and Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who passed away early Friday morning.

In a condolence message, Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Datuk Patinggi Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, extended their sympathies to the late leader’s family, describing him as a principled and steadfast political figure.

Wan Junaidi highlighted Bung Moktar’s firm convictions, courage in voicing his views, and unwavering commitment to his duties.

“His clarity and decisiveness earned him the respect of colleagues and the community,” he said, noting the late leader’s loyalty to his cause and his steadfastness in the face of challenges.

“In a time when the nation grapples with declining integrity and leadership values, he was like a ‘strand of thread’ held firmly to preserve the nation’s dignity,” he added.

He prayed for the family to be granted strength and for Bung Moktar to be placed among the righteous.

Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, also expressed his sorrow over the passing of the Kinabatangan MP and Lamag state assemblyman.

“We pray for Allah’s mercy upon him and for strength and patience for his family during this difficult time,” he said.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi remembered Bung Moktar as a friendly leader and colleague who consistently championed the people of Sabah.

“His passing is indeed a great loss to all who have worked with and known him,” he said.

Hulu Rejang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong praised Bung Moktar’s courage and leadership, particularly in voicing the concerns of the people, which earned him respect across the political divide.

“His passing is a major loss for Sabah and the nation,” he added.

Batang Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri noted that the late leader’s service and dedication would be remembered for generations.

“He leaves behind a significant legacy, especially among the people of Kinabatangan and Lamag who benefitted from his service. His contributions to the nation will remain etched in memory,” she said.

Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim reflected on his long acquaintance with Bung Moktar, dating back to his tenure as Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (FELCRA) chairman, recalling him as warm, jovial and humorous.

“He was a firm yet approachable leader, deeply proud of his roots and his people. His passing is a great loss not only to UMNO and Sabah but also to his many friends across East Malaysia,” he said.

Sri Aman MP Datuk Seri Doris Brodie described him as a vocal and forthright figure in Parliament whose absence would be deeply felt.

“A well-known and respected figure in UMNO and Malaysia’s political arena, he will be deeply missed,” she added.

Bung Moktar, 66, served as Kinabatangan MP for more than two decades and was also the Lamag assemblyman, making him a prominent figure in Sabah politics.
