KUCHING: The Sarawak government is looking forward to the potential collaboration between Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).

In this context Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg acknowledged the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement that the federal government will meet the state government to detail the scope of cooperation between the two oil and gas companies.

“It’s good that there is a collaboration between us,” he said after the opening ceremony of the D-Dentist’s second branch, Tabuan Jaya, here on Sunday (Feb 23).

As to when the state and the federal government will be meeting to discuss the matter Abang Johari said has yet to receive an official invitation for a meeting to discuss the partnership.

“If they (federal government) invite me, I will come … it’s not really urgent, but at least there is (a meeting).”

Anwar had at a press conference at the Madani Government 2025 Ministerial Retreat on Feb 22, said the meeting between the state and federal government is to explore cooperation to be undertaken by Petro and Petronas involving any new projects in any field.

“The agreement reached (so far) between me, representing the government of Malaysia and Sarawak Premier is to acknowledge all legal matters.

“I, together with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, will contact the Sarawak government, and if possible, we will call for a meeting to hear their proposal. I think the best solution will be achieved,” he said.

On Feb 18, Abang Johari in a statement said he had reached an understanding with the Prime Minister that Petros and Petronas will work together to advance both national and state interests.

“Even though Petros takes the role of gas aggregator existing contracts entered into by Petronas and its subsidiaries are not affected to enable Petronas to fulfil its domestic and international contractual obligations, but the performance of such existing contracts must not in any way adversely affect the role of Petros as gas aggregator and not be inconsistent with the provisions of the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016 (DGO 2016),” he said.

He also said that all parties respect federal and state laws including Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 1974) and DGO 2016.
