BANGKOK: Sarawak is aiming to host the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to international standards while promoting sustainability and an eco-friendly sporting culture.

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Thailand’s approach in adopting the “Green Games” concept for the 33rd SEA Games serves as a model for Sarawak’s preparations.

“This is a positive development and should become a culture for all events, not only in Sarawak but across ASEAN.

“This concept inspires Sarawak to ensure that the 2027 SEA Games are organised in line with international sustainability standards,” he said when met today (Dec 8) before visiting the SEA Games facilities as part of Malaysia’s preparation to host the 2027 edition.

Beyond the green sports concept, Abdul Karim said the visit also serves as a guide in several areas, including media management, food services, accommodation, and sports logistics.

“The insights gained here can also be applied to improve the quality of other local events such as regattas, food festivals and cultural festivals,” he added.

Additionally, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn said the hosting concept places strong emphasis on environmentally friendly principles.

“We may not be able to achieve this entirely, but we can still establish a new standard for green event management, and this effort aligns with the government’s policy to promote low-impact sporting events.

“This green hosting approach can become a benchmark for future sports or tourism events in the country,” he said.

Also present with Abdul Karim were Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, and MYSED Permanent Secretary Morshidi Frederick.
