KUCHING: The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development is planning to introduce the Sarawak Senior Entrepreneurs Programme to encourage soon-to-retire and retired civil servants to actively participate in entrepreneurship.
Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat proposed the idea during the Seminar on Basic Product and Service Development (SAPPS) Sarawak 2025, suggesting that the state explore a structured platform to support senior entrepreneurs.
He said retirees are a valuable demographic, often equipped with years of experience, knowledge, and most importantly, access to financial capital through pensions or EPF savings; key factors in launching a business.
“Many retirees already have the financial resources, and they’ve accumulated knowledge and wisdom over the years.
“Rather than allowing them to become targets of scams, as we often see in the media, it’s far better to guide them into entrepreneurship, where they can contribute meaningfully to the economy and their communities,” he said in his speech at the event held at the Kuching South City Council Auditorium today.
Ripin stressed that the proposed programme could provide structure and purpose to retirees looking for post-career fulfilment.
“This could be a continuation of life in a positive direction, not just for the individual, but for society at large,” he added.
He also highlighted the possibility of collaboration between retirees and younger entrepreneurs.
“There is great potential for knowledge-sharing between generations,” he continued.
“Retirees can bring capital and guidance, while younger entrepreneurs bring energy and innovation.
“This creates a dynamic and sustainable ecosystem.”
Ripin’s remarks come amid growing concern over the increasing number of retirees falling victim to financial fraud.
By offering a safer and more productive alternative, he believes such a programme could significantly reduce financial vulnerability while boosting local enterprise.
“If we can provide this group with a proper platform, they will not only continue to lead purposeful lives but also help drive our economy forward,” he concluded.
