KUCHING: Sarawak men’s under-21 water polo team claimed the winner’s title of the division at the 60th MILO/PRM Malaysia National Age Group Water Polo Championship held at Paroi Aquatic Centre in Negeri Sembilan last Sunday.
Taking place from Feb 14-16, the state team triumphed over Aquatics Kuala Lumpur, who finished as first runners-up, and Selangor, who secured second runner-up.
In addition to the victory, Sarawak’s impressive performance saw several players selected to represent Malaysia in the upcoming U-20 Asian Age Group Championships in Singapore from March 25 to 30.
In a recent interview with Sarawak Tribune, team coach Voon expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, especially given that most of the players are just 17 years old.
“Regarding the under-21 boys’ team, I am more than happy with the results as most of our players are only 17 years old.
“Based on their efforts, a few players have been selected to represent Malaysia in the upcoming U-20 Asian Age Group Championships. Their hard work has truly paid off,” he said.
In the women’s under-24 category, Sarawak secured second runner-up, with Selangor emerging as champions and Negeri Sembilan Aquatic Association finishing as first runners-up.
Sarawak’s under-16 water polo team placed fifth, trailing behind Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, and champions Selangor.
Voon acknowledged that while the girls’ team had potential, they would need to focus on improvement.
“The girls will need to be more committed and train harder to achieve better results,” he concluded.
