KUCHING: Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd has received international acclaim for its efforts in advancing sustainable urban mobility, earning a Special Recognition Award from the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) for its Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project.

The award was presented during a ceremony in Hamburg, where Sarawak Metro chief executive officer (CEO) Mazli Mustaffa accepted the honour from UITP president Renée Amilcar and UITP Asia-Pacific Division chairman Jeremy Yap.

The accolade acknowledges Sarawak Metro’s recent efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through the implementation of KUTS, which aims to introduce a modern, eco-friendly public transport system for Kuching, scheduled to begin operations in 2026.

In addition to receiving the Special Recognition Award, Sarawak Metro was also shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Climate and Health’ category at the UITP Global Awards.

According to Mazli, with over 300 entries submitted from 50 countries across nine award categories, being shortlisted was already a significant achievement.

“Although I was optimistic about our entry, I felt deeply honoured to learn that Sarawak Metro had made it to the list of finalists for this year’s UITP Global Awards.

“And to now receive the UITP Special Recognition Award for the work that we are doing is indeed a great honour, while at the same time all of us at Sarawak Metro are humbled by this recognition from such an esteemed organisation as UITP,” said Mazli in a statement issued by Sarawak Metro.

Mazli added that the award would further motivate the entire Sarawak Metro team to continue striving towards its goal of delivering a world-class public transportation system for Sarawak’s capital.
