KUCHING: The Sarawak Division of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has reminded employers and workers of the enforcement of the Minimum Wage Order (PGM), which took effect on Feb 1, setting the minimum wage at RM1,700 per month.

According to Sarawak MTUC chairman Zaidi Nasar, the order requires employers with more than five employees to adhere to the minimum wage regulation.

Additionally, employers involved in professional activities must comply with the order regardless of the number of employees.

“For employers with fewer than five employees, the order will be effective from Aug 1, 2025.

“MTUC emphasises that the minimum wage refers to basic salary and does not include allowances, incentives or other additional payments.”

Zaidi further clarified that workers paid based on task, tonnage, assignment, journey or commission are entitled to a minimum monthly wage of RM1,700.

He emphasised that employers cannot pay a basic wage below the stipulated minimum, even with the employee’s consent.

“In cases of non-compliance, employees are encouraged to lodge complaints with the Department of Labour.

“In addition, MTUC urges employees to spread this information to their colleagues and employers while also striving to enhance productivity and foster good relations with employers for mutual benefit.

“This increase in the minimum wage is intended to help workers cope with the rising cost of living.”

Workers experiencing issues with minimum wage compliance can seek assistance by contacting the Department of Labour or Sarawak MTUC via email at agsmtucswk@gmail.com.
