KUCHING: The Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMNS) is bracing for a packed competitive season, with several tournaments lined up both locally and abroad.

Its president Jumaat Ibrahim confirmed that the association is preparing for potential participation in a muaythai tournament in Pontianak, Indonesia, expected to take place in May or June.

“It’s likely the event will be held in May or June. Once we receive confirmation, we’re ready to represent Sarawak and show our support for regional competition,” he told reporters during a Hari Raya open house at his residence last night (Apr 4).

On the local front, Sarawak will host the prestigious TYT Cup Muaythai Championships from May 1 to 4 at the Kuching Waterfront — an annual event that continues to grow in scale and participation.

“We hope the people of Sarawak will continue to rally behind our athletes. Supporting Muaythai is part of our mission to nurture local talent and build a disciplined, focused generation,” Jumaat added.

He said the international-level tournament will feature top muaythai athletes from several participating countries.

In addition, the Borneo Cup Muaythai Championship will be held concurrently at the same venue. However, it will follow a different format, involving athletes from Borneo regions including Sarawak, Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan, Brunei Darussalam, and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Furthermore, the Sarawak Premier Cup Muaythai Championship — Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg Trophy — is scheduled to take place in Bintulu this October.

Jumaat reiterated his association’s commitment to maintaining Sarawak’s excellence in muaythai.

This aligns with the Sarawak government’s vision, through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), to preserve the state’s status as a Muaythai powerhouse — a position proven by its consistent success at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and other national tournaments.

“We truly appreciate the support MYSED has provided over the years. I believe their ongoing commitment is a key driver behind the success of our athletes,” he said.
