SELANGOR: Sarawak’s young muaythai exponents shone at the 1st ASEAN Team & Youth Muaythai Championships 2025, clinching a total of 10 medals — four gold, five silver and one bronze — as the competition wrapped up on Sunday at Paradigm Mall, Petaling Jaya.Of the nine Sarawakian athletes who reached the finals, four delivered glittering gold for the Bumi Kenyalang contingent.

Razie Rafizzie set the tone by overcoming Selangor’s Muhammad Adam in the 55kg category, before teammate Muhammad Syarul Fareez followed suit with victory over Ali Murtaza (Selangor) in the 50kg class.

Sarawak’s women also made their mark, with Noor Qasliya Mohamad Hardi defeating Kuala Lumpur’s Aisya Sofea in the 40kg division, and Hani Anissa Ismail outclassing Negeri Sembilan’s Dinar Fitrah in the 60kg category.

The silver medals went to Fatiha Hanum Abdul Hasrul (45kg), Muhammad Nur Aiman Kamaruddin (66kg), Mohammad Nurhizbur Asyraf Mohd Nazri (50kg), Rizz Ezzandy Iswandy (40kg) and Dylan Casey Daniel (40kg).

Meanwhile, Muhammad Rizqin (45kg) contributed a bronze to complete Sarawak’s medal haul.

President of the Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMNS), Haji Jumaat Ibrahim, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s showing.

“It’s a good start for all our young athletes. I hope they will continue to train hard and sharpen their skills.

“Although this meet was mainly for exposure, it is vital in preparing them for bigger tournaments ahead,” he said.

He added that PMNS plans to send the athletes to more tournaments of similar calibre as part of Sarawak’s build-up towards the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor.

Jumaat also thanked the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the coaches, while appreciating the Malaysian Muaythai Association (PMM) president’s role in securing Muaythai’s inclusion in SUKMA 2026.
