KUCHING: Sarawak needs a skilled and capable workforce to support the operations of its state-owned airline, AirBorneo.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that skilled workforce is crucial, to ensure smooth operations across all the airline’s functions.

“We need people to fly the planes. Not only do we need pilots, but we also need engineers to look after the aircraft’s engines. We also need ground handlers with state-of-the-art technology to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“Sarawak believes in the ability of Sarawakians. That is why the Centre for Excellence Technology Sarawak (CENTEXS) is there to develop these Sarawakians,” he said.

Abang Johari said this during CENTEX’s 9th Convocation Ceremony at E-Sports and Multipurpose Hall, CENTEXS Kuching, Jalan Sungai Tengah, Santubong here today.

The Premier also stressed the need for people with talent to manage advanced gas separation processes as Sarawak positions itself as a gas aggregator.

“Sarawak has five dams which can be used to extract hydrogen from water and we have another source – Methane. The gas is taken from the earth.

“In other words, you crack our methane and you produce other products such as methanol. You crack methanol, you produce ammonia. You crack ammonia, you produce ethylene. You crack them again, you get clothes. And that is the chain reaction of gas.

“With that gas, we create new industries. And we need people with talent to separate that gas,” he added.

Looking ahead, Abang Johari urged graduates and the younger generation to embrace innovation and technology as Sarawak moves forward with its development agenda.

“Particularly to our graduates, this is what the government has in mind. We are going forward. We cannot look behind anymore. And I need people to help us. And these are the people that must be equipped with the latest technology,” he said.
