KUCHING: Sarawak has not been notably impacted by the imposition of tariffs on imports from the United States (US), which came into effect today (Apr 9).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak’s economy is not reliant on the US market.

He explained that key commodities produced, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and palm oil, are primarily exported to countries including Japan, South Korea, China, and India.

“These tariffs do not significantly affect Sarawak because our exports to the United States are minimal, while our main commodity, LNG, is mostly exported to Japan and some to South Korea.

“The second largest commodity is palm oil, which is largely exported to China and India. In addition, other goods are also exported to European Union (EU) countries,” he said after attending the Hari Raya open house hosted by the advisor to the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment of Sarawak (MINTRED) Datuk Seri Naroden Majais on Tuesday evening (Apr 8).

On the semiconductor industry, Abang Johari said most semiconductors produced in Sarawak are exported to European countries.

“Overall, the industry that is affected by Malaysia is semiconductor exports.

“However, for Sarawak, our semiconductor chips are mainly exported to the EU, and the impact is not that significant. If there is any impact, it is minimal for that industry,” he added.

US President Donald Trump had imposed a reciprocal tariff of 24 per cent on Malaysian imports.
