SARIKEI: Sarawak is on course to achieve developed region status by 2030, with major progress made in infrastructure, energy, finance, and digital transformation under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state is approaching the end of the first phase of PCDS 2030 under the 12th Malaysia Plan, with significant milestones already achieved.

“We have made great strides in the first phase, especially in strengthening basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges, including the completion of the coastal highway network,” he said in his address during the state-level National Day 2025 celebration here, today.

The event was graced by Head of State Tun Pehin Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

Also present were Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Among the notable achievements, he highlighted the opening of the Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Bridge here last May, which connects strategic areas in the central region and unlocks new development potential in Sarikei, Bintangor and Tanjung Manis.

He also pointed to Sarawak’s successful takeover of the Bintulu Port Authority, which strengthens the state’s maritime capacity and opens new opportunities in international trade, as well as the establishment of Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd to transform water supply management.

In the aviation sector, Abang Johari said that AirBorneo, Sarawak’s own airline, will begin operations in January 2026, enhancing regional air connectivity and accessibility.

“Our success in setting up AirBorneo will empower the aviation sector and provide more inclusive and accessible mobility in the region,” he said.

On the financial front, the Premier underscored Sarawak’s acquisition of a majority stake in Affin Bank, which he described as a strategic move to complement physical development with financial strength.

“This provides wider financing access to local entrepreneurs and enterprises so that the benefits return to our people,” he said, adding that the opening of the Sarawak Regional Office of Affin Bank on August 26, the first in East Malaysia, further demonstrated its commitment to supporting Sarawak’s economy.

Looking ahead, Abang Johari said Sarawak will continue to drive growth through data, digitalisation, green economy and renewable energy, all in line with PCDS 2030’s core pillars of economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.

“Our journey towards becoming a developed region by 2030 is clear. With the foundations we have built, I am confident that Sarawak will achieve its aspirations,” he stressed.
