KUCHING: Sarawak has launched its first direct scheduled chartered flight service between Kuching and the Chinese city of Guangzhou.
The flight marks a landmark step in the state’s efforts to deepen air connectivity with China.
The inaugural flight ceremony was officiated on Tuesday (Mar 17) evening by Deputy Minister for Transport Datuk Henry Harry Jinep on behalf of Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
The service was made possible through the initiative and commitment of Bao Hang International Sdn. Bhd., which was credited for its role in promoting and facilitating the route.
Lee in his speech read out by Henry described the launch as an important milestone, noting that it represents more than a new flight service, but a growing bridge connecting people, strengthening friendships, and creating new opportunities for tourism, trade, investment and cultural exchanges.
“China has long been one of Sarawak’s key international markets for tourism and business, and Guangzhou’s standing as a major economic and commercial hub in southern China makes the route strategically significant,” he said.
The direct air link is expected to enhance accessibility and unlock new opportunities in tourism development, trade expansion and investment cooperation between Sarawak and southern China.
Sarawak is strategically positioned in the heart of Borneo, and the state government has identified enhanced air connectivity as a key priority in positioning itself as a vibrant destination for tourism, business and international collaboration.
The Sarawak government reaffirmed its commitment to support and encourage the development of more direct international flights connecting the state with key global destinations.
Strengthening air connectivity was described as essential not only for tourism growth, but also for facilitating trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges, while positioning Sarawak as an emerging aviation gateway in the region.
The scheduled charter initiative was characterised as an important first step towards building sustainable connectivity between Kuching and Guangzhou.
With strong support from travellers, tourism stakeholders and the business community, officials hope the route will grow and eventually pave the way for a fully scheduled regular direct service in the future.
