KUCHING: Asian countries are welcomed to send their teams to train in Kuching as preparation for the 2027 SEA Games, with Malaysia as the host nation and Kuching city among the main venues for the tournament.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said his ministry is ready to extend cooperation to any interested parties.
“We have excellent facilities. If your programme requires training facilities, especially for those who do not have such facilities in your own countries, you may liaise with the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) to bring your athletes here.
“This is part of our effort to ensure our existing facilities are utilised to the fullest,” he told reporters when met at the 3rd Malaysia Women’s Cricket Super Series 2025 held at Borneo Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Abdul Karim then said this matter has already been shared with top delegates who attended the recently concluded Borneo Games 2025.
“During the Borneo Games opening, we informed our friends from Brunei and Indonesia that we have very good facilities,” he said.
Earlier on, Abdul Karim highlighted that 16 SEA Games events will be staged in Kuching, marking a historic moment for Sarawak in hosting this prestigious Asian tournament, with nearly half of the overall events taking place in the state.
At the same time, Abdul Karim pointed out that some facilities will need upgrading to meet the required standards ahead of the Games.
“Among the facilities that require upgrading are Sarawak Stadium, the cricket field, and the shooting range.
“Meanwhile, other facilities may not need major upgrades, including swimming and tenpin bowling. So we want to ensure the facilities are fully optimised before the SEA Games,” he added.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) president Mahinda Valipuram welcomed Sarawak’s initiative, revealing that the Malaysian team competing in the SEA Games will also train in Sarawak.
