SELANGOR: Sarawak will be out to kick-start its campaign with a victory when it faces Sabah in its opening Group A match at the UKM Stadium tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 13).
The squad has set its sights on securing all three points against its neighbouring state, knowing that a positive result would strengthen its hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
Head coach Firdaus Morshidi said his charges are ready for the challenge and have been preparing well ahead of the crucial opening encounter.
“The players are in good condition and ready to face Sabah tomorrow. Obviously, we want the victory and all three points,” he told Sarawak Tribune recently.
However, Firdaus acknowledged that Sarawak cannot afford to take Sabah lightly, particularly with both sides eager to get their campaigns on track.
Sabah will also be looking to bounce back after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Terengganu in their opening match on Tuesday (Aug. 11).
Firdaus believes the defeat could make Sabah even more determined to secure a positive result against Sarawak.
“They will definitely be looking for a response after losing their first match, so we have to be careful.
“We cannot be too confident or underestimate them because that could come back to haunt us,” he said.
He stressed that discipline, concentration and commitment would be crucial if Sarawak are to come away with the desired result.
The Sarawak coach also urged his players to maintain their focus throughout the match and avoid any lapse in concentration that could give Sabah an opportunity to punish them.
“We have to play our game, stay focused and make sure every player gives his best. The target is clear – we want the three points,” he added.
