KUCHING: Sarawak are determined to turn silver into gold when cricket gets underway at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 in Selangor.
Assistant Chef-de-Mission, Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, said preparations are progressing well, with the squad set to complete its final phase of training through a series of friendly matches in India before the Games.
“Our target is gold. At the last SUKMA, we fell short of our target but still managed to reach the final.
“This time, I can see the spirit shown by our players and we hope to change the colour of our medal to gold,” he told Sarawak Tribune at the Borneo Cricket Ground today.
Kennedy added that the current squad, comprising several players from the previous SUKMA alongside a number of new faces, has been preparing consistently since the last Games and is ready for the challenge ahead.
He also credited improvements in Sarawak’s cricket infrastructure for boosting the team’s preparations, noting that the state now has a dedicated cricket ground where the athletes could sharpen their knowledge and skills on a dedicated field.
Describing the facility as one of the best in Borneo, Kennedy said its development marks a significant milestone for cricket in Sarawak.
