KUCHING: Sarawak pepper continues to command strong demand internationally, particularly in Japan, thanks to its superior quality and distinctive aroma.
Sri Aman MP and chairman of Saraspice Sdn Bhd (SSB) Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie, speaking at the launch of Saraspice’s new product range at the Sheraton Hotel here on Monday (Apr 28), revealed that Japanese consumers are willing to pay a premium for Sarawak pepper compared to other varieties.
“In fact, when they attempted to switch to pepper from other sources, their sales dropped sharply,” she noted, reflecting the high regard Japanese buyers have for the state’s famed produce.
Doris also announced that SSB is committed to collaborating with the Malaysia Pepper Board (MPB) to ensure the sustainability of Malaysia’s pepper industry, especially in Sarawak.
“We are working closely with pepper farmers, under MPB’s guidance and alongside our Japanese buyers, to ensure farming practices meet strict buyer requirements,” she said.
Under the initiative, SSB and MPB will monitor and train pepper farmers to uphold standards across the supply chain.
Doris emphasised that with guaranteed demand from buyers, the initiative would benefit farmers directly while promoting environmentally and socially responsible farming practices aligned with global Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards.
“The global pepper industry is rapidly moving towards sustainability practices, and it is crucial that our local industry adapts to these expectations or risk being sidelined by international buyers,” she cautioned.
In conjunction with the event, Doris unveiled Saraspice’s new line of products, which features revamped packaging for its 200g Sarawak White and Black Pepper, both in berries and ground forms.
The new range also includes Garlic Pepper seasoning, premium Creamy White Pepper (CWP), and 60g Coarse Ground Black Pepper.
“This launch marks a significant milestone in our efforts to position Saraspice as a premium brand,” Doris said, adding that more new pepper-based products are expected to be introduced under the Saraspice brand by the end of the year.
