KUCHING: Work on Sarawak’s new performing arts centre is progressing largely on schedule, with full completion now expected by the first quarter of 2027 following minor delays related to electrical cabling works.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the project had experienced slight setbacks.
“Despite the delay, the overall progress on site remains satisfactory. I don’t have the exact percentage offhand, but you can see that work is ongoing.
“I am also personally following up and pressing the contractors,” he said during a press conference held at the Baitulmakmur II building today.
He expressed hope that the facility would be completed by the first quarter of next year, allowing performances to begin soon after.
“As long as by the first quarter next year we can already have performances there, I would be very happy,” he said.
Abdul Karim said plans were also in place for a high-impact opening event, which is expected to feature quality orchestras and artistes from around the region.
However, he also said that, to ensure effective governance and long-term impact, a dedicated management body would be established to administer the Sarawak Performing Arts Centre.
“A special management body will be set up to manage and take care of the performing arts centre, and it will not be placed specifically under the Majlis Seni Sarawak,” he said.
Additionally, he said a structured management framework would be created to oversee operations, a move that has also received the Premier’s agreement.
The Sarawak Performing Arts Centre which is being developed through a refurbishment of the former Sarawak State Legislative Assembly building, is envisioned as an international-standard venue, inspired by London’s Royal Albert Hall.
