KUCHING: Sarawak is positioning itself as a key player in the aerospace industry with plans to develop an aerospace industrial park.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state is exploring the development of the park to attract aerospace manufacturing investments and foster industry collaboration.
“This initiative would position Sarawak as a hub for high-value aerospace component production and research,” he said.
He said this in his keynote address titled ‘Sarawak 2030: Architecting Regional Prosperity’ at the ASEAN Sarawak Business and Economic Forum 2025 ‘Collaborative Growth in ASEAN’s Evolving Economic Landscape’ at Riverside Majestic Hotel here today.
Abang Johari further said the aerospace sector is taking off in ASEAN, and the state is ready to be a key hub in the high-growth industry, capitalising on its strategic location and commitment to high-tech innovation.
“Our plans to develop an aerospace manufacturing and maintenance ecosystem are attracting investments in high-value aerospace components, aircraft maintenance, and research in sustainable aviation fuels,” he said.
He added the establishment of the Aerospace Academy at Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) in Lundu is a game-changer, preparing Sarawak’s workforce in aerospace engineering, drone technology, and satellite manufacturing to meet the demands of the future.
“Furthermore, the launch of Sarawak-based airline, AirBorneo, will revolutionise Asean’s air connectivity of which will strengthen regional routes, expand international accessibility, and foster new opportunities in tourism, trade, and logistics.
“Sarawak is no longer just part of the ASEAN airspace — we are shaping it,” he said.
