KUCHING: Sarawak is poised to play a pivotal role in the development of the ASEAN Power Grid, further cementing its status as a key regional energy hub.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this during the State Gawai Dinner tonight at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

The Premier expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and ASEAN member states for selecting Sarawak as the host of a recent senior ASEAN officials’ meeting focused on the region’s strategic energy agenda.

“The fact that Sarawak was chosen as the venue shows that our role in building the ASEAN grid is being recognised,” he said.

He reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s aspiration to become a major contributor to ASEAN’s sustainable energy future, particularly through the regional power grid initiative.

“With the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), we hope to implement this energy project.

“God-willing, Sarawak will serve as the central hub, elevating Malaysia’s profile in ASEAN energy connectivity,” Abang Johari said.

He also disclosed that he had discussed the matter briefly with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier that evening, touching on Sarawak’s strategic direction in the initiative.

“I hope one of Sarawak’s proposed strategies will help realise your vision for an ASEAN Grid.

“This initiative promises significant economic growth for the region, especially through Malaysia’s contribution,” he told the Prime Minister.

The ASEAN Power Grid is a long-term initiative aimed at enhancing cross-border electricity trade, strengthening energy security, and integrating renewable energy sources across Southeast Asia.

With its expanding hydropower capacity and growing regional partnerships, Sarawak is well-positioned to become a central player in this effort.

“Sarawak is ready to take the lead.

“We are committed to contributing meaningfully to ASEAN’s energy connectivity and advancing the region’s green growth agenda,” said Abang Johari.
