KUCHING: Sarawak has been hailed as a shining example of how peace, unity and community spirit can build a safe and progressive society — one that other Malaysian states should look to emulate.
Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) senior vice chairman Datuk Seri Ayub Yaakob said the state’s success in maintaining public order while fostering social harmony has made it one of the safest places in the country.
“Sarawak is among the safest states in Malaysia, ranked sixth in the country for safety.
“However, what is more important is that people here feel comfortable and secure. When a community feels safe, everything else, education, business, social development, thrives naturally,” he said.
When met during the Meet the Community and Crime Prevention Awareness Programme today (Oct 29), Ayub said Sarawak’s brand of unity and cooperation among its diverse communities is something worth studying and replicating.
“The state can be a model, not only for its safety but also for the unity among its communities.
“I invite people from other states to come and learn how Sarawak builds this sense of togetherness,” he said.
During discussions with community leaders, several issues such as online scams, drug abuse and social problems were raised, all of which are already being addressed through close cooperation between the public and the police.
In this regard, he reminded that security and crime prevention cannot rest solely on the shoulders of law enforcement.
“Security is not just the job of the police. It is the responsibility of the people themselves. I am proud of the community in Sarawak as they have shown strong commitment and cooperation,” he said.
Ayub noted that the state’s peaceful atmosphere and rapid economic progress would continue to attract both visitors and investors.
“Sarawak’s comfort and safety are remarkable. With its rapid economic development, the state is on the path to becoming even stronger, but we must protect what we have,” he said.
Also present at the event were MCPF executive member Datuk Muhammad Fuad Talib, Penghulu Bernadette, Organising Committee Chairman Councillor Nicholas Wung Duk Ying, and Padungan police station chief Insp Goh Chen Hong.
