KUALA LUMPUR: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been officially appointed as the new president of the Islamic Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (PERKIM) during the 64th PERKIM National Annual General Meeting held here today.

His appointment replaces former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who held the position since 2006.

At the same meeting, Dr Mahathir was also appointed as PERKIM’s Special Adviser.

In his acceptance speech during the Special Ceremony for the Handover of PERKIM Leadership, Abang Johari expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to carry out the responsibility to the best of his ability.

He also acknowledged that Dr Mahathir’s leadership had brought PERKIM to an admirable level and served as an example in the mission of Islamic outreach and welfare.

“Continuing this legacy is not an easy task, but with strong support from all levels, I am confident we can further strengthen PERKIM’s role in the modern Islamic outreach landscape,” he said.

Commenting on current challenges, Abang Johari emphasised the need for PERKIM to remain vocal and active in defending the plight of Muslims, especially in global issues such as the conflict in Gaza.

“In my view, PERKIM must continue to be vocal and proactive in expressing its stance and defending our fellow Muslims through effective and prudent approaches,” he added.

On the domestic front, he highlighted the importance of a more inclusive approach based on compassion, education, and ongoing awareness in efforts to reach out to the community.

Also in attendance were Economy Deputy Minister, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, PERKIM Vice-President, Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim, and members of PERKIM’s supreme council.
