KUCHING: The Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Ministry expects that by the end of this year, the tourism receipt will reach up to RM12 billion.
Its Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, announced that Sarawak’s tourism receipts surpassed RM1 billion in the first quarter of this year (January, February and March).
“Tourism this year saw steady visitor numbers from January to March, with a slight dip in March due to Ramadan, yet overall arrivals remained consistent.
“Throughout the first three months, we have seen the tourism receipt exceed RM1 billion.
“So we can expect that, by the end of 2025, it should be at least RM12 billion,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) 21st Anniversary Dinner at Imperial Hotel here on Wednesday.
Talking about STF’s anniversary, Abdul Karim said that the federation’s journey reflects the true spirit of collaboration, bringing together diverse sectors such as hospitality, travel, education, wellness, culture and medical tourism under one strong voice.
“It is clear that ‘Stronger Together’ is not just the theme for the anniversary dinner, it is the true foundation of STF’s success.
“Tourism has always been an important pillar for Sarawak’s economy and cultural identity.
“The role that STF plays, by representing the private sector, promoting industry excellence, and bridging communication with the government, is very much valued and appreciated by us at the ministry.
“Initiatives such as the STF Gawai Dayak Open House, the Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Awards, and the State Industry Report are excellent examples of how public and private sectors can work hand-in-hand to move Sarawak forward,” he added.
With the tourism landscape constantly changing, Abdul Karim said the competition is greater, and visitor expectation is higher.
“Sustainability is no longer an option, it is a must.
“That is why it is important for all of us, government, industry players and communities, to continue working together, innovating together, and growing together.
“The state’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 places great emphasis on tourism development, and we are committed to creating the right environment to support you, the industry players, to succeed.
“Through continued engagement sessions, town halls, open dialogues and programmes like those STF is planning, we can make Sarawak not only a destination of choice, but a destination of the future,” he added.
