BINTULU: The Sarawak government is prepared to allocate additional funds to assist in flood recovery efforts if the situation worsens in the state.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the state government has initially allocated RM10 million to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to aid flood-affected areas.
“If RM10 million is not enough and if the need arises, we will add more (fund) according to the needs of the flood-affected areas across Sarawak,” he said.
He said in a press conference after visiting the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at the Civic Centre here on Saturday.
Abang Johari also said the state government will carry out an audit to determine the necessary actions for restoring normalcy in areas affected by the recent floods and with the findings to be presented for discussion in the Cabinet.

“What is important is restoring the public infrastructure, as there are roads that have been cut off and need to be rebuilt.
“There are also other areas affected, including schools and water disruptions of which we have to restore,” he said.
He also said public health is another priority as floods often lead to the spread of waterborne diseases.
“Thus, the state government will step in to provide assistance to the health authorities to assess and monitor the health of the community,” he said, while saying that evacuees at the temporary evacuation centres (PPS) will also be assisted with food and other necessities.
On another note, Abang Johari also thanked all government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and elected representatives in the state for aiding those affected by the flood.
He also expressed appreciation to a corporate company in Miri which has donated RM300,000 to the flood relief efforts, and Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (SHEDA) Bintulu Branch which has contributed RM600,000 to assist the community.
