Sarawak records five new cases

KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded five new Covid-19 positive cases on Saturday (Jan 2), with four cases reported in Sibu and one in Bintulu.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement today, said this brings the total number of cases in the state to 1,130.

It said Case 1,126 involved a five-year-old boy from Kedah who had entered Sarawak with his parents via Bintulu Airport from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Dec 31. The case entered Sarawak because his father will be working at a plantation company in Bintulu.

SDMC said the case underwent the Covid-19 screening after arriving at Bintulu Airport on Dec 31 and was sent to the quarantine centre to undergo the 14-days mandatory quarantine. The case started to have a fever on Jan 1 and a swab test was done on the same day and was found to be positive for the virus.

It said the case was referred to Bintulu Hospital for further treatment.

SDMC said the case is classified as Import B as the case had been infected while being in Selangor, a high-risk area for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Case 1,127, 1,128, 1,129, 1,130 involved four local women who have been screened after having close contact with Case 1,115. All these cases work together in the same place and live in Sibu District.

SDMC said one of the cases is a sister to Case 1,115 and the others were friends and colleagues to her sister.

It said all four cases had visited and spent the night at Case 1,115’s house (index cases) on Dec 24 to 26, and these cases were identified as close contact to the index case on Dec 30 during the investigation on the case.

SDMC said the case has been instructed to undergo Covid-19 swab test on Dec 31 at a health clinic in Sibu and instructed to undergo quarantine on the same day. The RT-PCR test result came back positive on Jan 1.

It said one of the cases had a cough on Dec 31 while the rest did not show any signs or symptoms of the virus. All cases were admitted to Sibu Hospital for further treatment.

SDMC said this case is classified as Import C in which they got infected from Case 1,115 during a visit to the patient’s house located in Maradong.

It said that the status of Sibu District has changed from yellow to green zone as there were no local transmission reported in the district in the last 14 days.

The committee also mentioned that there were two new recoveries and discharged cases from Sibu Hospital and Miri Hospital, thus this brings the cumulative total of recovered and discharged cases to 1,071 or 94.78 percent of the total cases recorded in Sarawak.

It stated that 37 patients are currently receiving treatments at isolation wards in hospitals, with 14 in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), 10 in Sibu Hospital, seven in Miri Hospital and six in Bintulu Hospital.

SDMC added there were seven new person-under-investigations (PUI) reported while two PUIs are awaiting laboratory test results.

Meanwhile, the committee said that 589 person-under-surveillance (PUS) had been checked into quarantine centres to undergo quarantine.

This brings the current total number of PUS at 43 hotels and non-hotel quarantine centres statewide to 3,601 persons, while 47,076 PUS has completed their quarantine period.
