KUCHING: Sarawak’s plan to introduce the Sarawak Regatta Circuit next year is expected to elevate traditional water sports while enhancing the state’s image as an international tourism destination.
Stakan Assemblyman, Datuk Hamzah Brahim, said that the regatta is more than just a boat race, but a unifying tradition that brings together people of all races and religions.
“In the regatta atmosphere, we gather, celebrate and cheer for our teams together. This is the Sarawak spirit that we are proud of,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
Hamzah pointed out that the regatta, which dates back to 1872 during the reign of Rajah Charles Brooke, is among the oldest traditional sports still practised in Sarawak.
He said with better structure and support, it could become a catalyst for economic activities, provide opportunities for small traders, and attract tourists.
“With the state government support, the regatta can grow further and truly become a people’s sport that makes us proud,” he added, citing his own experience as part of his team, Pasukan Perahu Udak.
He noted that Sarawak could emulate the success of Pacu Jalur in Riau, Indonesia, which has gained global recognition as a traditional water sport.
The proposed circuit, Hamzah said, also has the potential to attract participation from neighbouring countries such as Kalimantan and Brunei, strengthening regional ties while boosting international appeal.
At the same time, he called on the corporate sector and private companies to contribute and collaborate in supporting the event.
“Strategic partnerships will not only ease the burden of organisers but also strengthen corporate social responsibility (CSR) in preserving our cultural heritage,” he stressed.
Hamzah expressed confidence that the Sarawak Regatta Circuit will help bring the state to a new level in showcasing its traditions while positioning it as a world-class cultural tourism destination.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said at the 22nd Sri Aman Benak Festival on Saturday that Sarawak is considering the establishment of a regatta circuit to capitalise on the growing popularity of traditional boat races and to stimulate local economies.
