SARAWAK has received approximately 1,000 applications proposing the creation of new Community Leader and Village Chief positions from all Divisions throughout Sarawak.
According to Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai, the Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs), the government is aware of the growing need for additional leadership posts, including in Balingian, Engkilili, Serembu and Kabung.
“The government is attentive towards the need for new community leaders and village chiefs across Sarawak.
“All applications received from throughout Sarawak, including Balingian, Engkilili, Serembu and Kabung, have been thoroughly reviewed.
“Each proposal has been studied comprehensively, taking into account key factors such as land ownership status, geographical considerations, population growth, the number of households, the size of the jurisdiction, and the construction of new longhouses or settlements,” he said during his DUN winding-up speech.
He said, these applications have been tabled before the Special Committee on the Management of Community Leaders and Village Chiefs.
“The committee has deliberated on these applications, and they will be forwarded to the approving authority for further consideration.
“The expansion of community leadership roles is important as settlements grow and new longhouses are established, to ensure that governance at the grassroots level remains effective and well-represented,” he said.
