THE Sarawak Science Centre is expected to hold its soft opening in the first quarter of 2026, said Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He said construction progress is currently at 65 per cent, with full completion anticipated by the end of December 2025.

As part of the initiative, he said a satellite hub will also be established at the Sarawak Biovalley Pilot Plant in Miri, which will include the state’s first Common Science Lab.

“This is the first Common Science Lab in Sarawak, and it will be used by students in Miri to conduct science experiments that cannot be carried out at school,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech in the august House today.

Meanwhile, Sagah said the Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) unit is actively conducting upskilling and re-skiling programmes to support the state’s goal of producing 500 skilled semiconductor engineers by 2030.

To strengthen Sarawak’s presence in the global semiconductor industry, he said SMD has recently established a Research and Development (R&D) Innovation Hub in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom, in collaboration with CSA Catapult.

“This strategic move gives us direct access to world-class research facilities, top-tier talent, and key industry players.

“To date, 28 trainees have completed their six-month training and were hired by SMD, Melexis, and X-FAB,” he added.
