BETONG: The Sarawak Government will identify the most suitable technology to strengthen internet access in rural areas under its continuing push to close the digital gap across the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state may consider utilising the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (SRBN), which connects directly to the cloud and enables mobile access through phones and tablets.

“Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas told me the internet here keeps buffering, so we need to find a solution. Maybe through SRBN, where the data goes straight to the cloud.

“That data can then be used on our phones and iPads. I will ask Julaihi to identify the right technology that suits rural needs,” he said, referring to Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.

Earlier, Uggah urged the state government to upgrade high-speed broadband for the constituency, saying residents frequently complain about poor mobile and internet coverage.

“This has become a normal issue. But under your digital policy, with online learning and digital tools for agriculture, we must plant the spirit for the people to embrace digital systems,” he said.

During the event, Abang Johari also officiated the launch of the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA).

Uggah, who is the Bukit Saban Assemblyman, said BDDA is part of a new, decentralised development model introduced by the Premier, now adopted in nine divisions across Sarawak.

He said RM1.5 billion was approved in the first phase, with RM200 million allocated to each state constituency in Betong and separate funds for its two parliamentary constituencies.

“This is an exclusive policy by the Premier, allowing project planning to be coordinated locally. We hope the Premier will kindly approve another RM1.5 billion under the 13th Malaysia Plan,” he added.

Uggah said about 40 per cent of the funds will be channelled to economic activities.

“This will help improve incomes, not just build infrastructure,” he said.
