KUCHING: Sarawak Rugby has sent its largest-ever contingent to the National 7s tournament in Terengganu, with full representation in the men’s under-21, women’s under-21, and women’s men’s open categories.
The squads departed carrying more than just gear — they carry the pride of Sarawak as they prepare to compete against the nation’s best.
Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) honorary secretary Rashid Salleh said the state rugby body has exceeded expectations this year by successfully fielding teams in all major categories — a testament to the growing depth and commitment within Sarawak Rugby.
“This is the biggest contingent we’ve ever sent to a National 7s tournament.
“Every team has its own physio, and we’re also sending two SRU medical officers to support the squads throughout the tournament,” Rashid told Sarawak Tribune today (July 21).
He added that beyond competition, the experience would be invaluable, especially for the U21 teams who missed last year’s tournament due to scheduling conflicts with the Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
“This tournament will help gauge where Sarawak Rugby stands in the national rugby scene and offer our young players vital exposure on the big stage,” he said.
Sarawak’s men’s and women’s open teams have shown solid progress, with the men’s side achieving their best-ever eighth-place finish in 2024 and the women improving from fifth in 2019 to fourth in 2023.
The U21 squads impressed with third-place finishes for the women in both 2019 and 2023, while the men made their debut in 2023. Both teams missed the 2024 edition due to SUKMA commitments.
With all teams back in the mix and a strengthened support system in place, expectations are high for Sarawak to make a strong impression in Terengganu.
The National 7s tournament is seen as a key stepping stone in SRU’s long-term development strategy leading up to the 2025 edition and beyond.
