KUCHING: Sarawak is setting its sights on eight gold medals at the 22nd Malaysian Deaf Games (SOPMA) 2025, with high hopes pinned on tenpin bowling, a sport long regarded as the state’s traditional powerhouse.
The host state is fielding a 73-member contingent comprising 47 athletes and 26 officials.
In total, 777 participants are competing in Kuching, including 610 athletes and 167 officials representing contingents from across Malaysia.
State Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, expressed confidence in the team’s spirit and determination to deliver results.
“They have endured many challenges, but their teamwork and commitment are extraordinary. With such perseverance, I believe they can achieve the goals set, God willing,” she said.
Fatimah made the remarks during a press conference after officiating the flag handover ceremony at Wisma Wanita Hall on Tuesday (Sept 30).
While tenpin bowling remains the main gold medal target, Sarawak is also eyeing podium finishes in athletics, badminton, and orienteering.
“Tenpin bowling has always been our strength. Several SOPMA bowlers from Sarawak have even gone on to represent Malaysia on the international stage, including the Deaflympics. That speaks volumes of their ability,” she added.
She also acknowledged the financial hurdles faced by other state contingents in travelling to Sarawak but praised their commitment to participate despite rising costs.
“We are truly grateful for their presence, which adds to the vibrancy of this year’s games. Our athletes, too, understand these challenges when competing outside Sarawak,” she said.
Fatimah reaffirmed the state government’s continued support for the development of sports among the deaf community, emphasising that athletes deserve every opportunity to compete at the highest level.
